Theory of Semi-Instantiation in Abstract Argumentation

چکیده
We study instantiated abstract argumentation frames of the form (S ,R, I), where (S ,R) is an abstract argumentation frame and where the arguments x of S are instantiated by I(x) as well formed formulas of a well known logic, for example as Boolean formulas or as predicate logic formulas or as modal logic formulas. We use the method of conceptual analysis to derive the properties of our proposed system. We seek to define the notion of complete extensions for such systems and provide algorithms for finding such extensions. We further develop a theory of instantiation in the abstract, using the framework of Boolean attack formations and of conjunctive and disjunctive attacks. We discuss applications and compare critically with the existing related literature. 1 Motivation and Orientation This paper studies semi-instantiated argumentation network of the form (S ,R, I), where (S ,R), R ⊆ S×S is an abstract argumentation network and I is an instantiation function, giving for each x ∈ S a formula I(x) of some logic L. The attack relation R is not instantiated and remains abstract. We are not told, in terms of the logic L, why there is an attack. There are several possibilities for such a system to arise. Option 1. We can view such a system as semi-ASPIC like instantiation. The APPIC approach (see [32]) will start with a theory ∆ in a logic, L define the notion of L-proofs for ∆ and will elt S be the set of all possible such proofs and will further define the attack relation R ⊆ S × S in terms of relationships among these proofs. In our case we just take ∆ as the arguments (no proof theory avaiable) and simply tell you abstractly what is supposed to attack what. Meta-Argumentation Modelling I: Methodology and Techniques
In this paper, we introduce the methodology and techniques of metaargumentation to model argumentation. The methodology of meta-argumentation instantiates Dung’s abstract argumentation theory with an extended argumentation theory, and is thus based on a combination of the methodology of instantiating abstract arguments, and the methodology of extending Dung’s basic argumentation frameworks with...
متن کاملOn support relations in abstract argumentation as abstractions of inferential relations
Arguably the significance of an abstract model of argumentation depends on the range of realistic instantiations it allows. This paper therefore investigates for three frameworks for abstract argumentation with support relations whether they can be instantiated with the ASPIC framework for structured argumentation. Both evidential argumentation systems and a simple extension of Dung’s abstract ...
متن کاملA Study of Unrestricted Abstract Argumentation Frameworks
Research in abstract argumentation typically pertains to finite argumentation frameworks (AFs). Actual or potential infinite AFs frequently occur if they are used for the purpose of nonmonotonic entailment, so-called instantiation-based argumentation, or if they are involved as modeling tool for dialogues, n-person-games or action sequences. Apart from these practical cases a profound analysis ...
متن کاملA New Class of Classical Logic Instantiations of Dung’s Abstract Argumentation Theory
The question whether Dung’s abstract argumentation theory can be instantiated with classical propositional logic has drawn a considerable amount of attention among scientists in recent years. It was shown by Cayrol in 1995 that if direct undercut is used, then stable extensions of an argumentation system correspond exactly to maximal (for set inclusion) consistent subsets of the knowledge base ...
متن کاملOn the Instantiation of Knowledge Bases in Abstract Argumentation Frameworks
Abstract Argumentation Frameworks (AFs) provide a fruitful basis for exploring issues of defeasible reasoning. Their power largely derives from the abstract nature of the arguments within the framework, where arguments are atomic nodes in an undifferentiated relation of attack. This abstraction conceals different conceptions of argument, and concrete instantiations encounter difficulties as a r...
